I had several questions for the electricians and had some information I wanted to share for fellows who were interested in apprenticeship in inside wireman or power lineman. Quick about me – I am a 24 year old, recent university graduate living in Berkeley, CA. I did not know about this trade until I rented a room for 3 months in San Diego past year. The homeowner's husband and son were both power lineman and they were enthusiastic about their careers. "Money is good man… but it's HARD work. " They emphasized the hard part several times, haha. The father and son both recommended me to attend line school either at LA or in Northern California if I was serious. I did research to see that Powerline Mechanic Training Program @ LATTC – 20 units x $46/unit ~ $1, 000. If I apply for financial aid and get lucky, I might not have to pay for it due to Pell grant. Howeer, it seems like the class is very popular; the class size was 21, and I saw the waitlist reaching 50 for spring semester. I contacted the trade school and asked many questions.

Before enrolling in the Powerlineman course (ELECL 601, Powerline Mechanic Trainee) which is 15 units for 1 semester (offered in Fall and Spring), I need to take two prerequisite courses, ELEC 116 and 119 to be eligible to sign up for ELECL 601. That means that I would need to take two pre-requisite courses in the summer semester, then ELECL 601 in the Fall, if everything goes smoothly. Not everyone signs up at the same time = people with more units get to sign up earlier. Therefore, if you don't have any LATTC credit (like me) = you get to sign up later = the Powerline class fills up and you're screwed. This is only my assumption after looking at the waitlist; the e-mail response I got from the manager was ambiguous regarding the waitlist.
